SA: Whale freed by local diver

A local diver has come to the rescue of a southern right whale which became entangledin rope in the South Australia's Spencer Gulf today.

The 13-metre whale was spotted offshore from Whyalla this morning with two floats attachedto the rope which had become entangled around its head.

National Parks and Wildlife officers took to the air to assess the situation by planeand said the material was restricting the whale's movement and causing it some distress.

National Parks spokesman CHRIS HALSTEAD says he's confident all the rope has been freedbut the whale's progress will be monitored to ensure it has no further problems.
