EUR: Microsoft accused of illegal practices in Europe

European Union regulators have widened their investigation into Microsoft, suggesting
it may be violating antitrust laws by tying its Media Player into its Windows operating
system.

The regulators also say Microsoft may have used illegal practices to extend dominance
in personal computers into server markets.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, says it is sending a formal statement
of objections to the US software giant.

It says its decision follows an investigation into Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating
system, launched last February.

Microsoft has two months to respond.
